<p>For those unfamiliar with the term, SP1 stands for “<a href="http://www.naturalstep.org/the-system-conditions">Sustainability Principle</a> 1” or “System Condition 1”, referring to the first of four sustainability principles (which define the boundaries of a sustainable society). This first principle states:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>“In a sustainable society, nature is not subject to systematically increasing concentrations of substances extracted from the earth’s crust”</em></p></blockquote>
<p>This principle (and the other three) was elaborated under a scientific consensus, and this one applies the laws of physics in a system thinking over the planet. This is a quite solid concept. But working with mining companies (my latest projects were with mining companies willing to contribute to sustainable development), made me think that this concept could be improved:</p>
<p>Instead of using the term “extracted from the earth’s crust”, I’d rather say “In a sustainable society, there is no reliance on non-renewable materials”.</p>
<p><strong>Rationale</strong>: We are talking about society existence in the long term within the biosphere constraints, and the current statement is focused on the collapse of the biosphere, whereas my suggestion focus on society’s collapse, which would, maybe, comes first from the exhaustion of non-renewable inputs from which society as we know it depends on.</p>

<p>I believe it is all very well tied up, and it is just a matter of timing: if we don’t want these substances to systematically increase in concentration, we don’t want to depend on them as inputs to society. But before they increase enough in concentration in nature to hit a threshold, we will be in trouble of hitting our society’s consumption peaks of these materials.</p>
<p>One question that came to my mind: Is there any (natural) non-renewable substance found in the surface or is it all on the lithosphere?</p>
<h4>Em português</h4>
<h2>Repensando a CS1</h2>
<p>Para aqueles não familiarizados com o termo, CS1 significa “<a href="http://www.institutoatkwhh.org.br/compendio/?q=node/102">Condição Sistêmica</a> 1” ou “Princípio para sustentabilidade 1”, referindo ao primeiro de quatro princípios para a sustentabilidade (que definem os limites de uma sociedade sustentável). Esse primeiro princípio afirma:</p>
<p>“Em uma sociedade sustentável, a natureza não é submetida ao aumento sistemático de concentrações de substâncias extraídas da crosta terrestre”</p>
<p>Esse princípio (e os outros três) foi elaborado sob um consenso científico, e esse aplica leis da física em um entendimento sistêmico do planeta. É um conceito bastante sólido. Mas trabalhando com empresas mineradoras (meus últimos projetos foram com empresas mineradoras que desejavam participar do desenvolvimento sustentável) me fizeram pensar que este conceito poderia ser aperfeiçoado:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>Ao invés de usar o termo “extraídas da crosta terrestre”, Eu diria “Em uma sociedade sustentável, não há dependência de materiais não-renováveis”.</em></p></blockquote>
<p><strong>Justificativa</strong>: Estamos falando da existência da sociedade no longo prazo, dentro das limitações da biosfera, e o texto atual foca no colapso dessa biosfera, enquanto minha sugestão foca no colapso da sociedade, que iria, talvez, ocorrer antes devido ao esgotamento de insumos não renováveis dos quais a sociedade que conhecemos depende.</p>
<p>Acredito que está tudo muito bem conectado, e trata-se apenas de uma questão de tempo: se não queremos que essas substâncias se acumulem na biosfera, também não queremos depender delas como insumos para a sociedade. Mas antes que cresçam suficiente em concentração na natureza para atingir um ponto crítico, estaremos com problemas ao atingir o pico de consumo desses materiais na sociedade.</p>
<p>Uma questão que me veio à mente: Existe algum material natural não renovável que seja encontrada na superfície ou está tudo enterrado na litosfera?</p>

<p>I am not a big fan of lists or “quick steps to…” but after observing a series of case studies and with my own business experience, I found out a few system elements that represent the focal points in any organization and that are usually responsible for failing organizations:</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-458" title="Key Success Factors" src="http://braziliancoffee.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/imagem1.png?w=500&#038;h=329" alt="" width="500" height="329" /></p>
<p>This scheme is currently a draft, waiting for criticism. Everything is connected but some connections are stronger then others:</p>
<p>Everything starts with <strong>people</strong>. Of course. The reason for the existence of any organization lies in people’s needs and, by definition, an organization needs people to exist.</p>
<p>The right people are everything in an organization. But usually, these people lack some features that are essential for success.</p>
<p><strong>Leadership</strong>: Even in democracy, a strong leadership is needed for coordinated action to take place. Without leadership showing the way, the organization won’t move. Too soft leaders lead to an undisciplined and ineffective team.</p>
<p><strong>Knowledge</strong>: What is a restaurant with a chef who can’t cook? What is a newspaper with people who can’t write? To know one’s work is obviously fundamental. But some people do start organizations without a clue on what is their business.</p>
<p><strong>Passion</strong>: People must be moved by something. They must be passionate for their purpose and/or work. Without that kind of energy, everything falls. I believe everyone had an experience with impassionate professionals who make it all sound more difficult and not fun at all.</p>
<p><strong>Communication</strong>: Strong leadership can do wonders on communication. New network theories and experiences show a new way, of dispersed communication and collaboration. For people to work together, they must communicate, and the leadership must show the right way. Communication without leadership (or a clear goal) is like chattering in a classroom: random talks not linked to the class’ object.</p>
<p><strong>Process</strong>: Knowledge and leadership leads to an adequate and efficient process. It is hard to have a failing process when there is leadership and the right skills in place.</p>
<p><strong>Consistency</strong>: Process leads to consistency, and that’s definitely value to customers (or stakeholders). Failing in being consistent is failing reputation and, in the end, failing the organization.</p>
<p><strong>Product</strong>: Great products and services rock! And forget about “marketing studies” and “attending a demand”. The conventional theory is just wrong. You can’t see a repressed demand until you stumble on it. Attend your own demand and see if others agree. There was no “demand” for Twitter whatsoever&#8230; Great products are also highly influenced by the organization’s know-how and process consistency.</p>
<p><strong>Placement</strong>: Closely related to products is the organization’s placement. Do you want to sell trust? Be serious and reliable. Do you want to sell fun and aesthetics? Be friendly and beautiful. Be in the right place and send out the right message.</p>
<p>Are you in a sinking boat? It’s probably one of those factors, or the existing relationship between them. Please share your own stories!</p>
<h1>Fatores de sucesso (para qualquer organização)</h1>
<p>Eu não sou muito fã de listas ou “passos rápidos para&#8230;” Mas após observar uma série de estudos de caso e minha própria experiência com negócios, descobri alguns elementos sistêmicos que representam pontos focais em qualquer organização e que costumam conter o motivo do insucesso de muitas organizações.</p>

<p>Esse esquema é atualmente um rascunho, aguardando para ser criticado. Tudo está conectado, porém algumas conexões são mais fortes que outras:</p>
<p>Tudo começa com as pessoas. É óbvio. A <em>reason d’étre</em> de qualquer organização está nas necessidades das pessoas e, por definição, uma organização precisa de pessoas para existir.</p>
<p>As pessoas certas são tudo em uma organização. Mas muitas vezes essas pessoas não possuem algumas características essenciais para o sucesso.</p>
<p><strong>Liderança</strong>: Até mesmo na democracia, uma liderança forte é necessária para a ação coordenada acontecer. Sem uma liderança para mostrar o caminho, a organização fica imóvel. Líderes frouxos resultam em uma equipe indisciplinada e ineficiente.</p>
<p><strong>Conhecimento</strong>: O que é um restaurante cozinheiro que não sabe cozinhar? O que é um jornal com pessoas que escrevem mal? Saber o trabalho a ser feito é obviamente fundamental. Mas algumas pessoas começam empreendimentos sem a menor idéia sobre o que é o seu negócio.</p>
<p><strong>Paixão</strong>: As pessoas precisam ser movidas por algo. É preciso paixão pelo propósito e/ou pelo trabalho. Sem esse tipo de energia, tudo cai por terra. Acredito que todos vocês já tiveram alguma experiência com um profissional sem paixão pelo que faz e que fazem tudo parecer mais difícil e nem um pouco divertido.</p>
<p><strong>Comunicação</strong>: Liderança forte pode fazer maravilhas quanto à comunicação. Novas teorias e experiências com redes sociais mostram um novo caminho, de comunicação e colaboração dispersa. Para as pessoas trabalharem juntas devem se comunicar; e a liderança deve mostrar o caminho certo. Comunicação sem liderança (ou um objetivo muito claro) é como conversa em sala de aula: bate-papo aleatório sem relação com o ensino.</p>
<p><strong>Processo</strong>: Conhecimento e liderança levam a um processo adequado e eficiente. É difícil ter um processo ruim ou errado com a liderança e as habilidades necessárias.</p>
<p><strong>Consistência</strong>: Processos levam à consistência, e isso representa valor aos clientes (ou partes interessadas). Falhar em ser consistente é falhar na reputação e, ao final, falhar na organização.</p>
<p><strong>Produto</strong>: Produtos e serviços ótimos são o máximo! E esqueça sobre “pesquisa de mercado” e “atender à demanda”. A teoria convencional está errada. Você não consegue enxergar uma demanda reprimida até tropeçar nela. Atenda a sua própria demanda, e descubra se outros concordam. Não havia “demanda” alguma para o Twitter&#8230; Ótimos produtos também são altamente influenciados pelo conhecimento intrínseco de uma organização e processos consistentes.</p>
<p><strong>Posicionamento</strong>: Muito relacionado com os produtos está o posicionamento da organização. Você quer vender confiança? Seja sério e fidedigno. Quer vender diversão e estética? Seja amigável e bonito. Esteja no lugar correto e mande a mensagem adequada.</p>
<p>Você está em uma barca furada? Provavelmente é um desses fatores. Ou a relação que existe entre eles. Mande suas estórias!</p>

<p>I am currently reading a great book (spontaneous publicity) on entrepreneurship: <a href="http://37signals.com/rework/">37signals&#8217; &#8220;rework&#8221;</a>. One of the things that caught my attention because I haven&#8217;t thought about that before, was a chapter named &#8220;Focus on what doesn&#8217;t change&#8221;.</p>
<p>The idea is that companies, products etc should think about &#8220;unchangeable&#8221; demands. Something like (for the sustainability savvy) thinking about the fundamental human needs (or societal needs). Instead of a &#8220;car company&#8221;, a &#8220;mobility company&#8221; or instead of selling consulting XYZ, sell knowledge, wisdom, insights and assurance (unchangeable needs in organizations over the last centuries and centuries to come – I cannot think about a company not wanting any more wisdom and assurance)</p>
<p>At first, this sounds familiar to two old concepts:</p>
<p><strong>The “solution” bubble</strong>, where all companies started having mission statements that sounded like this: “Our mission is to provide smart solutions to our customers in XYZ”. That was just hypocritical or stupid. 99,99% of companies didn’t become “solution” companies, they just kept on doing what they were doing while changing their mission statements.</p>
<p><strong>The service economy</strong>. A widespread term amongst sustainability practitioners and well described on the classic book “<a href="http://www.natcap.org/">Natural Capitalism</a>”: The idea that companies should hold full stewardship over their products, and sell services instead of goods.</p>
<p>The interesting catch from “Rework” is the focus on what the product features should be like (to attend the human or society needs) instead of too broad definitions and ideas. I think this was a valuable insight for anyone who thinks innovation.</p>
<h1>Sustentabilidade empreendedora</h1>
<p>Não Empreendedorismo sustentável (podemos falar disso depois).</p>
<p>Estou lendo um ótimo livro (publicidade espontânea) em empreendedorismo: <a href="http://37signals.com/rework/">&#8220;rework” da 37signals</a>. Uma das coisas que chamou minha atenção porque eu nunca havia pensado naquilo antes, foi um capítulo intitulado “Foque naquilo que não muda”.</p>
<p>A idéia é que empresas, produtos etc. devem pensar em demandas “imutáveis”. Algo como (para os sabidos de Sustentabilidade) pensar em necessidades humanas fundamentais (ou necessidades sociais).  Ao invés de uma “empresa que fabrica carros”, uma “empresa que fornece mobilidade” ou ao invés de vender uma consultoria XPTO, vender conhecimento, sabedoria e garantias (necessidades imutáveis em organizações ao longo dos últimos séculos e em séculos a vir – não consigo pensar em uma empresa não querendo mais conhecimento e segurança)</p>
<p>Isso soa familiar a dois antigos conceitos:</p>
<p><strong>A bolha da “solução”,</strong> aonde todas as empresas começaram a ter declarações de missão que pareciam com isso: “Nossa missão é fornecer soluções inteligentes para nossos clientes em XYZ”. Isso foi hipócrita ou estúpido. 99,99% das empresas não se tornaram empresas de “soluções”, elas continuaram a fazer o que estavam fazendo enquanto suas declarações de missão mudaram.</p>
<p><strong>A economia de serviços</strong>. Um termo difundido entre os interessados em sustentabilidade, e bem descrito no livro “<a href="http://www.natcap.org/">Natural Capitalism</a>” (Capitalismo Natural): A idéia que empresas deviam ser completamente responsáveis por seus produtos, e comercializar serviços ao invés de bens.</p>
<p>A sacada de “Rework” é o foco nas características do produto (para atender às necessidades humanas ou da sociedade) ao invés de idéias e definições muito amplas. Eu vejo isso como uma idéia valiosa para qualquer um que pensa em inovação.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align:justify;">Ok, so genetically  modified (GM) plants and animals is the trendy polemic theme today. They  are bad, they are Frankenstein, we are playing God, they are bad for  the environment and your health, they are the answer to all our food  problems, they are one of the best inventions of the century.</p>
<address><em>Em  português abaixo</em></address>
<p style="text-align:justify;">How to get around all this information mess? Well, let’s make  sense of all of it:</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">For  ages mankind have selected crops and created monocultures in vast  fields of stuff we wanted (rye, wheat, a few kinds of fruits, rice,  coffee and a few others) the same happened to animals, as we  domesticated just a very few species. We destroyed some pretty complex  and diverse ecosystems on the way. Most recently, we developed  technology to work around the genes, and speed up that process of  selection of the crops with the features that best fit us, and even go  further and develop features in crops that evolution would never input  in a certain plant or animal.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Let’s take a look on both sides of it:</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Pros:</strong> it can improve crops, improve our food, even protect the environment as  it makes crops more productive and plague-resistant; it avoids the need  to expand the farming areas to forests, and avoid the use of pesticide  and other poisons. Also, it can help food last longer after the harvest  (for transportation and storage).</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Cons:</strong> the perpetuation of the low-diversity cycle we are in, decreasing the  ecosystems’ resilience, impoverish farmers making them dependent on big  corporation technologies, develop tougher plagues, and maybe even affect  people’s health (still no consensus on that). So far this tech has been  applied under big corporation short-term short sighted interests,  making all these threats are very real. Environmentalists get shiver  (for a good reason) with the mention of companies like Monsanto, DuPont,  Syngenta and Dow and their genetic research.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Getting the noise out of this information,  the problem is not really the technology, but its application. That is  fundamentally rooted in our social system. Genetic engineering is a  tool. Like dynamite, it is a dangerous tool that can be used for good or  evil. Mr. Nobel was very pleased with his findings on dynamite, but not  so happy to know it was being used to kill people. The same happens  with GM.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Like I  recently learned, it can be used to improve biofuels, to solve vitamin  deficit in some human populations, make food last longer in our houses.  These are all very positive and useful things. The genetic research  itself is not a problem. But companies are using this to their own  interests and to less noble purposes.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">In the end, it all comes down to the  question: do we really need it? Are the pros of this technology really  better than the cons or, like nuclear weapons, it is a technology better  be forgotten? The world lives a food surplus and it can feed all the  people yet to born without any higher pressure on the environment. The  current applications of the technology seem to be doing more harm then  good. How to change the corporate behavior so it really maximizes  well-being, not only profits?</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">
<p style="text-align:justify;">One last comment: some  environmentalists are thrilled with the possibility of using a GM algae  to produce renewable fuels.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">
<h2 style="text-align:justify;"><strong>O bom, o mau  e o feio: transgênicos</strong></h2>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Então, plantas e animais transgênicos são o  tema polêmico na moda. São maus, são Frankenstein, estamos brincando de  Deus, são maus para o meio-ambiente e para sua saúde, são a resposta a  todos nossos problemas com alimento, são uma das grandes invenções do  século.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Como entender  toda essa confusão de informações? Bem, vamos tentar desmistificar:</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Por eras a humanidade vem  selecionando quais plantas e criado monoculturas em extensas áreas de  coisas que queríamos (trigo, feno, algumas frutas, arroz, café  entre  outros) o mesmo ocorreu com animais, já que domesticamos poucas  espécies. Destruímos alguns ecossistemas bastante complexos e diversos  nesse processo. Mais recentemente, desenvolvemos a tecnologia para  trabalhar os genes e acelerar esse processo de seleção das  características que mais nos apetecem, e ir além para desenvolver certas  características em plantas e animais que a evolução nunca as colocaria.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Vamos dar uma olhada nos  dois lados da coisa:</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Prós</strong>:  Pode melhorar as plantas para o consume humano, melhorando nossa comida  e até proteger o meio-ambiente ao tornar plantações mais produtivas e  resistentes à pragas evitando a necessidade de expansão da área  cultivada para florestas e minimizando a necessidade de pesticidas e  outros venenos agrícolas. Por último, pode ajudar à fazer a comida durar  mais tempo depois da colheita.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Contras</strong>: A perpetuação do ciclo de baixa diversidade de  alimentos, decrescente resiliência dos ecossistemas, empobrecimento dos  fazendeiros ao fazê-los dependentes de tecnologias de grandes  corporações, o desenvolvimento de pragas mais fortes, e talvez efeitos  negativos na saúde das pessoas (ainda sem consenso nisso). Por enquanto  essa tecnologia tem sido utilizada sob o interesse de curto prazo e de  visão limitada de grandes empresas, fazendo todas essas ameaças bem  reais. Ambientalistas têm arrepios (com motivo) só de se mencionar  empresas como Monsanto, DuPont, Syngenta e Dow e suas pesquisas em  genética.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Ao tirarmos o  excesso de informação, o problema não é bem a tecnologia, mas sua  aplicação. Isso está fundamentalmente enraizado em nosso sistema social.  A engenharia genética é uma ferramenta. Como dinamite, é uma ferramenta  perigosa que pode ser usada para o bem ou para o mal. O Sr. Nobel ficou  muito contente com sua descoberta, mas não muito feliz ao saber seu uso  para matar pessoas. O mesmo ocorre com transgênicos.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Eu aprendi recentemente que  os transgênicos podem ser utilizados na melhoria de biocombustíveis, na  solução de deficit vitamínico em algumas populações, podem fazer a  comida durar mais em nossas casas e geladeiras. Essas são todas coisas  muito positivas e úteis. A pesquisa genética em si não é um problema.  Mas empresas têm utilizado esse conhecimento em seu próprio interesse e  propósitos menos nobres.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">No final, tudo se resume em uma questão: será que realmente  precisamos disso? Seriam as vantagens dessa tecnologia realmente  superiores aos riscos e desvantagens ou, como os armamentos nucleares,  trata-se de uma tecnologia que seria melhor esquecermos? O mundo vive um  momento de excesso de comida que pode alimentar a todos e até aqueles  ainda não nascidos sem aumentar a pressão sobre o meio-ambiente. As  aplicações atuais da tecnologia parecem estar fazendo mais mau que bem.  Como poderemos mudar o comportamento das empresas para que realmente  maximizem o bem-estar, não apenas os lucros?</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">
<p style="text-align:justify;">Um último comentário: alguns ambientalistas  estão empolgados com a possibilidade de se usar algas transgênicas para  produzir combustíveis renováveis.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p align="justify">In the recent years, all over the world, we are living a boom in the number of “leaders”. Everywhere one can be trained as a leader and convinced that it is one’s destiny to lead. It smells like a scam (or, in a better case, ingenuity) the idea that we need all these leaders.</p>
<p align="justify"><em><strong>em português abaixo</strong></em></p>
<p align="justify">“A tribe cannot have two chiefs”. And no matter how much training two people have, a leader will be “chosen”. Its like that boat tale:</p>
<blockquote><p align="justify">On a field trip to nature, five people were put in a boat downstream with rows. No one told who was the boss, but soon enough, with the need to deal with the dangerous river, one person started shouting to the others about what to do and how to row… That way they maneuvered the boat and arrived safely. After that happened, the leader was taken out and the four people left were put in the boat again to go down another stream. After a short discussion, one person was chosen to lead by the group (no time to vote on a leader in a boat!) and that went on with three and two people.</p>
</blockquote>
<p align="justify">I take two lessons from this story: everyone can be a leader, in the right moment and situation, and you don’t have to assign someone leader or teach someone to lead.</p>
<p align="justify">Of course leadership skills could be improved for every leader out there (the people on that boat could learn better how to manage a rowing team downstream), but right now society is just overwhelmed by so many people being called leaders. It simply isn’t true. </p>
<p align="justify">The value of specific, non-leader tasks is being underestimated. And that is quite dangerous for society as it takes the risk of deteriorating the very basis of its structure.</p>
<p align="justify">Maybe there is a third lesson on the boat story: you can lead as much as you want, but without people to row, it won’t work!</p>
<h2 align="justify">Chega de liderança!</h2>
<p align="justify">Nos anos recentes, em diversas partes do mundo, estamos vivendo um boom de “líderes”. Em todo lugar alguém pode fazer um treinamento ou curso de líder e ser convencido de que liderar é seu destino. Parece-me um truque (ou, no melhor cenário, muita ingenuidade) a idéia que precisamos de tantos líderes.</p>
<p align="justify">“Uma tribo não pode ter dois caciques”. E não importa quão capacitado uma pessoa seja, um líder é “escolhido”. É como a estória do bote:</p>
<blockquote><p align="justify">Em uma excursão na natureza, cinco pessoas foram colocadas em um bote com remos para descer um rio. Ninguém lhes falou quem era o chefe, mas logo, com a urgência de se lidar com as correntezas perigosas, uma pessoa começou a gritar para as outras, o que fazer e como remar&#8230; Dessa forma eles manobraram o bote e chegaram com segurança. Depois disso, o líder foi retirado do grupo, e as quatro outras pessoas foram colocadas de novo no bote para descer outra corredeira. Após uma pequena discussão, outra pessoa foi escolhida para liderar o grupo (não há tempo para votar em um líder em um bote!) e isso se repetiu com três e duas pessoas.</p>
</blockquote>
<p align="justify">Eu tiro dois aprendizados dessa estória: todo mundo pode ser um líder, no momento e situação certas, e você não precisa escolher um líder ou ensinar alguém a liderar. </p>
<p align="justify">Claro que as habilidades de liderança podem ser melhoradas em qualquer líder que está aí (aqueles no bote poderiam ter aprendido a gerenciar melhor a equipe de remo), mas no momento atual a sociedade está cheia de pessoas sendo chamadas de líderes, e isso simplesmente não é verdade.</p>
<p align="justify">O valor de tarefas específicas e não ligadas à liderança está sendo subestimado. E isso é bastante perigoso para a sociedade que corre o risco de deteriorar as bases fundamentais de sua estrutura.</p>
<p align="justify">Talvez exista um terceiro aprendizado na estória do bote: você pode liderar o tanto que for, mas sem ninguém para remar, de nada adianta!</p>
